Hoagy wrote lyrics for some of his songs, but not many. Example, his
Riverboat Shufflk\e was originally written, no lyrics, as "Free
Wheeling." Publisher later had words added and changed title,
The composers that wrote both lyric and song were rarities and most
collaborted with a partner. Berlin, Gershins and Porter were more the
exception, and most songsmith output was partnered. Mercer penned a few
songs, (I want to be around to pick up the pieces), Walter Donaldson
wrote lryics to some of his songs, but usually had lyricists, with Gus
Kahn his favorite. Hoagy wrote a few lyrics, but mostly he was the music
half of a partnered effort.
