THE PANAMA JAZZ BAND

Thursday 28 April 2005

The Panama Jazz Band was formed nearly twenty years ago by Bob Coverdale, the only surviving member. Many original members of the band had previously played with other bands where entertaining the audience came second to pleasing the musicians. From the outset Panama wanted to reverse that and be entertainers. That ethos continue to this day and will be on display at Clevedon Jazz Club's regular Walton Park Hotel venue on Thursday 28 April.

Over the years the band has played at many important venues: Royal Ascot, Henley, Longleat and Bowood House, as well as most of the large London hotels, and every year, hotels in Northern Spain and the South Brittany coast. Locally Panama has always been busy playing for barbecues, corporate events and the occasional funeral. The band has played for so many weddings that they have lost count, and one bride even booked the band the second time around!

Panama believe in enjoying themselves as well as giving the audience a good time. They are quite liable to swing into old music hall songs and invite the audience to sing along, and then give a perfect rendition of jazz classics.

On Thursday 28th the front line will be leader Bob Coverdale, trombone and vocals. Bob is really quite a newcomer to jazz having rekindled an interest in music and brass instruments when he saw retirement from a full-time job looming. Kid Ory is his idol and he loves spiritual music. Tom Doughty' trumpet and vocals, was leader of the Jubilee Jazz Band for many years and has played in various dance bands and brass ensembles. Clive Johnstone, clarinet, saxophone and vocals completes the line. He is the leader of the Clifton Jazz Band and is in big demand to play with other bands when not with Panama.

The rhythm section comprises Mike Beard, banjo and guitar, who always delights audiences with his virtuosity. Mike Ducker on bass is the most recent member of the band and has been with Panama for about three months. John Coad on drums is no stranger to Clevedon Jazz Club and completes the rhythm section providing the driving force behind many of the band's tunes.

The doors at Clevedon Jazz Club's Walton Park Hotel venue open at 8pm, the music starts at 8.30pm and its £6 'on the door'.
