Hi all,
Anton noted (regardng the symphony player whose violin Isaac Stern used when
a string broke):

>One wag observed that a really "on-the-ball" leader would have restrung
>Stern's violin, re-tuned it, and given it back at the end of the movement

Seems like an efficient thing to do . . . but - anyone who puts a new string
on any stringed instrument (metal or nylon - but especially nylon) will
discover that the string will immediately stretch and need retuning every
couple of minutes to stay in pitch. This would definitely NOT be the thing
to do with a violin soloist such as Stern or Perlman or anybody who is in
performance!

The instrument should be tuned and then allowed to sit for a long period of
time (perhaps a day or two) so that the string is stretched to the maximum
and only then will it hold a pitch long enough to be used in performance.

Respectfully submitted,
