believe me, I'm not putting Yancey down
Many happy Saturday nights were spent in Jimmy's apartment, down by the
White Sox ball park. What entertainment: Don Ewell, Little Brother Montgomery,
Jimmy's playing and Mama, singing the blues. I met Don Gibson and his beautiful
wife, Taffy, there. Judge Jimmy's playing as you will, but what a fine
gentleman. Around two or three in the morning, he'd shepherd my brother Howard and
me through the milling hordes to the el station. To keep us alive, he'd say.
One night, I sat beside Little Brother on the sofa. I guess, resenting my
skin color, he gave me an elbow to the ribs. After trading a few shots, Chippy
Hill intervened and dragged him away. Even that episode was rather colorful,
and fun, in a way.
In sum total, the Yanceys were wonderful, gracious people, and the music,
exciting. What fine memories. bob simpson
