Louis and Bix showed everyone how. Later but not greater, Pee Wee
Russell, Rod Cless, Bobby Hackett... Still later, Lester Young and
Miles... Also, Al Haig and Tommy Flanagan, Chet Baker. Paul
Desmond--most of the "cool school" players, So many to be grateful for.
Other side of the coin--what players played most wonderfully even as
many of their phrases that had bundles of complex rhythms, lots of
notes? Bird, Dizzy, Bud Powell, Clifford Brown, Lee Konitz, Max Roach,
Coltrane... Many modernists today, also, from Wynton Marsialis'
generation.,, All of these could also play very lyrically, using chops
functionally rather than just to dazzle impressionable listeners.
Feeling comes first, the notes are the means.
