The Maine Jazz Alliance is delighted to present Concord Jazz recording
artist Ken Peplowski and the Jim Howe Trio on April 23 at the First
Parish Church in Brunswick to help us celebrate April as Jazz
appreciation month. Clarinetist and tenor sax virtuoso Ken Peplowski, a
member of Benny Goodman's last working orchestra, casts a long shadow
with over 16 critically acclaimed albums on the Concord Jazz label. He
is favorably compared to Benny Goodman—the New York Times raves that he
is “Goodman Straight up with a Twist of Lightning.” He is always a top
contender in Downbeat Magazine and JazzTimes critics and readers polls,
and Ken tours the globe performing in the top jazz clubs, arts centers,
jazz festivals and symphony halls with humor and charm that connects
with audiences world-wide.

Born May 23, 1959 in Cleveland, Ohio Peplowski began his professional
career at age nine making local radio and television appearances. In
1979 Peplowski joined the Tommy Dorsey Band and he has been wowing
critics for over twenty years. Jazz critic, Chip Defaa wrote in Jazz
Times of one of those early performances, "...he [Peplowski] was an
exceptionally facile, fluid, and melodic soloist even at the tender age
of 19.” While on the road with the Dorsey Band Ken met saxophonist Sonny
Stitt and soon became one of Stitt’s pupils. Peplowski left Cleveland
for New York City in 1980, and was soon busy performing and recording
with musicians as diverse Mel Tome, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George
Shearing, Tom Harrell, Hank Jones, Leon Redbone, Woody Allen, Erich
Kunzel, and Rosemary Clooney, before joining Benny Goodman’s band in
1984.

Peplowski has been a featured performer with the American Jazz Orchestra
and has performed in some of New York’s legendary club’s past and
present and has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. No
discussion of Ken Peplowski would be complete with out the mention of
his extensive and award winning discography. Highlights include his
Concord debut, Double Exposure (CCD-4344), Groovin’ High (CCD-4509) a
three tenor romp with Scott Hamilton and Spike Robinson, and Ken
Peplowski and Howard Alden Concord Duo Series Volume III (CCD-4556).
Currently Ken tours 12 months of the year. Ken Peplowski's performances
and recordings cement his reputation as one of the most talented and
inventive mainstream multi-reedmen of his generation.

The Jim Howe Trio will provide the rhythm section for this exciting
evening of mainstream jazz in the Mid-Coast. The pairing of Ken
Peplowski and the Jim Howe Trio is a perfect fit. Ken’s, charm and
sense of humor offers a delightful juxtaposition for the sometimes
irreverent, but always loveable Jim Howe. Howe has spent a life-time
playing, living and teaching jazz. A stalwart of the Seacoast jazz scene
Jim has performed with some of the best jazz musicians in the world,
including: Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Herb Pomeroy, Phil Woods, and Dave
McKenna to name a few. Jim has released two critically acclaimed albums
on the Invisible Music label and in 2001 the Jim Howe Trio won the
Spotlight on the Arts critic’s choice award as best jazz act. Jim Howe
is truly one of Maine’s Jazz treasures.

Rounding out the Jim Howe Trio are Ryan Parker on piano and Les Harris
Jr. on drums. Pianist, recording artist, and educator, Ryan Parker is
an instructor at the University of Southern Maine. MJA concert goers
will remember Ryan’s superb performances at the Chocolate Church with
tenor player Harry Allen and at Crooker Theater in a memorable concert
with trumpet great Herb Pomeroy.
Drummer Les Harris Jr. began playing the drums at a young age under the
tutelage of his father. He was sitting in with jazz greats Herb Pomeroy,
Bob Wilber, Dave McKennna, John LaPorta, and Teddy Wilson by the time he
was 14. Les has toured with the Artie Shaw Orchestra, with tenor
saxophone great Scott Hamilton, and as a member of Tommy Gallant's Trio
Les has had the opportunity to play with some of the best known artists
in jazz, including Clark Terry, Milt Jackson, Phil Woods, Art Farmer,
Annie Ross, Teddy Wilson, Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, Ray Brown, Marian
McPartland, Jimmy Heath, Ken Peplowski, Al Grey, Marshall Royal, Buddy
DeFranco, Bud Shank, Don Doane, Harry Allen, and Charlie Mariano.

April is Jazz appreciation month. Come out on April 23 and celebrate
this uniquely American Music. The concert will be held at the First
Parish Church, Maine Street, Brunswick (in the center of the rotary at
Maine St and Bath Rd). Reserve your tickets early as they will go
quickly for this special event. To reserve your tickets call
