What? No Armand J. Piron? :-) VBG

No doubt this group will inspire controversy. When suggesting changes, we
should perhaps also suggest who should be dropped on a one for one
replacement basis.

Cheers,
Steve

Jazz at Lincoln Center - First 14 inductees to Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame

MORE FAME FOR THE FAMOUS Jazz at Lincoln Center is to announce today the
induction of the first 14 musicians into its Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame in
the organization's new home in the Time Warner Building at Columbus Circle.
The first inductees are Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Bix Beiderbecke,
John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman
Hawkins, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Jelly Roll Morton, Charlie Parker,
Art Tatum and Lester Young. Relatives and friends of the inductees will
accept the awards, to be given by musicians including Herbie Hancock, Hank
Jones, Clark Terry, Randy Weston and Jazz at Lincoln Center's artistic
director, Wynton Marsalis. The hall of fame is a gift of Ahmet Ertegun - a
Jazz at Lincoln Center board member and a founding chairman of Atlantic
Records - and his wife, Mica. They have named it in honor of Nesuhi Ertegun,
Ahmet's late brother, another initial partner in Atlantic records and an
important advocate for jazz in journalism, education and recordings.
"Originally, I thought it would be nice to have a space where people could
see and hear the great pioneers of jazz, a place depicting the history," Mr.
Ertegun said in an interview. "But our board said that in America, a hall of
fame is a draw for the public, especially for non-New Yorkers, and I agreed
with them. This is a small space, but it will celebrate the great people of
jazz, and give jazz fans a locus." The musicians were chosen by a 72-member
panel of educators, musicians and scholars. The Hall of Fame, which will be
free and opens to the public on Oct. 21, includes interactive kiosks,
touch-activated virtual plaques and a video wall, all centered on changing
exhibitions.
