(I have experienced that too, Rebecca. When asked to reduce the volume of
(amplified instruments, or snare drums, or cymbals, the players sometimes
("cop an attitude" and refuse to play as a part of the team. If you follow
(these players into a studio and listen to their headphone mixes while
(recording, they invariably have their instrument up so hot they can't hear
(much of the other players.
(
(Ego? Necessity? Deafness? Hard to say which shoe fits. One thing is for
(sure, it makes it tough on the band to be a non-bickering "family" on
stage.
(And, the leader HAS to step in and manage stage volume. Otherwise, the
(audience's attention goes to the offending instrument that's sticking out.
(Might try that avenue next time. :>)
(
(My old high school band director had a great line for this. "Make you part
(fit!" (Try saying that 5 times fast).

((Rebecca asked
((Jim and I were in Fritzel's in New Orleans one night the bass player (not
((Pat!) had his amp turned up so loud that it hurt our ears. If any of you
((have been there, you know the venue is small and really no need for the
((music, especially the bass, to be that loud. We attempted to tell the
((player and he would "play" with the controls, but never brought the sound
((down so that it didn't interfere with sound coming from the other players.
((
((Do you think musicians loose their hearing and just don't realize how loud
((>they are playing?
((
((Yes and there is the attitude that some want to stand out as individuals
((above the band
