If you play music as it was meant to be played then you should stay away from 
'the Great American Song Book' as most of the material written by Porter, 
Kern, Gershwin and others was written as either show or film music with big 
orchestrations and very little to do with jazz. 'Summerime' was written as a 
operatic aria and the 'classic' recording by Bechet was as far away from the 
composer's original intentions as it is possible to be methinks!

To use a little East Anglian English, "them jazzers have always buggered 
about with the music and sometime it works and sometimes it don't."
