Feather and Gitler's "Biographical Dictionary of Jazz' (1999): "Jay Mc 
Shann.  b. 1/12/16 (he claims that a 1909 birthdate, given elsewhere, is 
incorrect)".
BUT
in "Kansas City and All That's Jazz",
published by the Kansas City Jazz Museum (1999), in "An Interview With Jay 
McShann", it is: "born on January 12, 1909" .
So yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice!  Cheers.
