Hi, Folks:
That's how I've read it in literature through the years.  "Pipe" as slang was 
sort of like "look at" something.
However, (and this is the English teacher in me talking) that's why we teach 
our college students to use a "formal tone" in academic writing.  Slang 
changes meaning over time, or means different things in different regions or 
different sociological/cultural groups.
So, "pipe" might have meant different things in a different context.  The 
only one I'm familiar with, though, is the "look at" usage.
