Folks,

people who make it happen.

The Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society has reported that advance
ticket sales for the 2004 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee are currently running
about 7.5% ahead of last year, as the festival's opening day nears.
"This is an extremely positive development for us," said Roger
Krum, the festival's Executive Director. "Almost half of the festival's
ticket revenues are derived from advance sales, which tend almost entirely
to be for the full four days of the festival. This assures us that we are
likely to be well in the black in 2004."
The Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, which this year will occur May 28-31,
is expected to attract more admissions than last year, when it had its
largest number ever. "If our advance sales are any indication, we are
likely to have another record year in 2004," Krum said. That makes for a
very healthy festival.
DJMLers can look forward to a festival that, although pared down a
bit, continues to provide a very large helping of traditional jazz. About
30 trad-oriented bands will be among the approximately 100 groups
performing at the festival this year; and, as always, the Jubilee will
maintain several venues devoted just to trad jazz.
The festival will feature two new trad-oriented bands -- Buffalo
Ridge, from Cincinnati, and the 4th Street Five, from the Napa Valley.
Among the trad-oriented bands returning to the festival this year are the
Uptown Lowdown, Buck Creek, Queen City, Blue Street, Climax, and Natural
Gas jazz Bands. International bands include Hungary's Hot Jazz Band and
Sweden's Jazzin' Jacks. Other noteworthy groups include the Royal Society
Jazz Orchestra, the popular Cornet Chop Suey, and Bill Allred's Classic
Jazz Band, which will will perform two sets featuring the 10-piece
arrangements of Matty Matlock. Swing-oriented groups include The Fulton
Street Jazz Band, Chicago Six, and the Yankee Wailers.
The Jubilee, which continues to be the largest festival of its
kind in the world, will involve more than 100 groups performing at about 40
venues from Old Sacramento to Cal Expo. Musical offerings continue to span
a full spectrum of American musical styles, including the earliest New
Orleans-oriented jazz, contemporary Latin jazz and Blues as well as country
and western, Zydeco, Barbershop, Blues and Gospel music.
This year's show will feature The Hues Corporation, which will
perform its show, "The Great American Songbook," a tribute to great
entertainers, songwriters and musicians who make up the songbook. The group
had major hits in the 1970s, with "Rock the Boat, "Freedom for the
Stallion," and "the rhythmic anthem, "Love Corporation." All of these
recordings ranked near the top of the Top 100 in Billboard, Cashbox and
Record Wrold.
The Hues Corporation is a stand-in for Sam Butera and the Wildest,
which had to drop ot of the festival because of health reasons.
The Hues Corporation will be flanked by several returnees - Jack
Daniel's Silver Cornet Band and the magnificently talented Classic Jazz
Band led by Bill Allred. A new and highly anticipated group this year will
be the Bay Area-based Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums, featuring vocalist
Carmen Getit.
