Dear Peter,
So far as I can find out, "The River's In Mourning" from the 1965 Steve
McQueen film 'The Cincinatti Kid' has never appeared on LP nor (so far) on
CD. Unless Bill Bissonnette has put it out recently on his prolific Jazz
Crusade label in the US.
It was filmed in Preservation Hall in New Orleans and the backing band to
singer Sweet Emma Barrett was led by Punch Miller, t; with Peter Crawford,
tb; George Lewis, cl; Sweet Emma, p/v; Allan Jaffe, tu; & Josiah 'Cie'
Frazier, d.
As I recall, the snip in the film is only about a minute long.
A local mate, bjoist Geoff Holden, has in on cassette.
I believe that you live in or near Melbourne, Australia.
If so, you may know the New Orleans 'experts' Peter Haby, Eric Brown or
tbnist Hugh de Rosayro. Peter is a Punch Miller specialist (he wrote a long,
informative article for 'Footnote' magazine in 1982), Eric is knowledgeable
about everything 'New Orleans' and Hugh (who plays the music well) is a
jazz film/video collector.
Either one should be able to help further with your query.
I can provide their contact details off list.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
