If any list mates happen to be in the Wilmington DE area on July 4th,
please come to the City's "Freedom Celebration 2004".
It is an all day celebration in Tubman Garrett Park, on the Christina
River featuring attractions for people of all ages. Approximately 25,000
people from 2 to 80 years old are expected.
While there is walk around entertainment, there is also an evening
musical program on the mammoth main stage. Among bands playing there is
The Barbone Street Jazz Band, with Special Guest Jonathan Russell, a 9
year old jazz violinist. (As previously posted, he is terrific)
Barbone Street was a last minute replacement for the Delaware Symphony
Orchestra which performance was scrubbed this week. The City immediately
called us and was thrilled that we could fit in a one hour program from
7:15 PM to 8:15 PM. (We have an earlier private party gig at Society
Hill in Philadelphia). There will be bands before us and after us. Then
at 9:30 PM their locally famous fireworks show.
Bass player Ace Tesone's 15 year old grandson is coming in from
Cleveland and will sit in on drums for a while. So Barbone Street
average age will go from 70 to about 52 when both young guys are on
stage. Jazz is indeed the fountain of youth.
So, if in the area, fall by and say hello. In the meanwhile, get some
paying gigs for kids and keep this music alive.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
PS. If they use the Clifford Brown Jazz Fest Stage, it will have a
large 30 x 30 foot TV screen behind the bands, facing the audience.
Nothing like being projected on a giant TV to the audience. Especially
when soloing and it's a head shot.
