Dear Steve and friends
You are correct. Louis' first recording (with orch and choir) of "What A
Wonderful World" was made for ABC-Paramount on 16 Aug 1967 along with "The
Sunshine Of Love".
At the same session the All Stars (Louis, Tyree Glenn, Joe Muranyi, Marty
Napoleon, ring-in Art Ryerson, Buddy Catlett & Danny Barcelona) cut
"Hellzapoppin/Cabaret".
On 11 Oct Louis featured "WAWW" on the Johnny Carson NBC Tonight TV Show.
The Armstrong All Stars (as above minus Ryerson and with Jewel Brown)
featured it again at a concert at the Marine Stadium in Miami, Florida on 13
Nov 1967.
It was trotted out again for an ABC 'Operation Entertainment' TV show at
Fort Hood Army Base, Texas on 20 Dec 1967 and the next day at Killeen,
Texas. This was telecast on 19 Jan 1968 and is probably the one Hans Koert
was asking about.
The All Stars featured "WAWW/Cabaret" on the Jackie Gleason TV show (in
Miami) on 30 Dec 1967.
The next "WAWW" outing appears to have been on the Johnny Carson TV show on
22 April 1968.
The Brits got to hear it at a concert in London on 3 July 1968 which was
shown on BBC TV on 2 Aug 1968. Then again at a London concert on 4 July 1968
(Telecast in Sept 1968).
"WAWW" was recorded again in NYC for Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label on
26 May 1970 with a big string orch.
Then it was aired on the 'Dial M For Music' TV show (5 July 1970) and at the
Newport Jazz Festival on 10 July 1970 with a Bobby Hackett group.
Enough! Enough!
Jess and I have to attend a birthday lunch in an hour or so.
There is a little bit more to follow regarding the date and authorship of
"WAWW", which will follow later today.
I hope.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
