Thinking about it more, I play a bit "south", as Bob put it, but never give
it much thought.  Doesn't really matter, as long as all the positions are
relative, and you're in tune with the rest of the guys.  Why south?  Fully
closed is too tight for fast work.  We're talking like a centimeter here,
not inches.  The reasons given in the first post by the trombone teacher
would require a lot of space.
