Good informative post Jim - Yes I agree.
When playing with a grand piano we usually have the banjo player in the
elbow of the grand and the double bass at the end of the piano (on the short
stick) with central drums behind the front line.  Each band member usually
requests "a full monitor mix" for big stage work.
