I now understand that you (John Peters) are referring to "full time"
professional musicians.  Please understand that there are tens of thousands
part time
musicians who are professional in every aspect of the word.  I do not
believe
that there needs to be a dividing line between the two.  And, just because
an
artist is not full time, does not disqualify him/her from professional
status.
 To do so would be a great injustice.

If a definition is so important (and don't we jazz musicians love to place
labels on things) to describe what constitutes a professional musician, here
is
mine: "A professional musician is one who performs at the leisure of the
public and is compensated at market price for such."
