 U.K. academic parlance, sounds like 
um, ah, er, etc. are called 'filled pauses', 



Hey guys,

Try listening to a James Brown recording sometime, if it were not for the 
filled pauses, there would be no lyrics at all, :)  in most of his songs, old 
James has a PHD in academic Parlance and can't even spell it.

Then there was of course "Mumbels McGee" who had a few hits.
