The comments about Black Musicians, and what they call/called their music
stirred up the following thoughts:
The following bit (translated from Spanish) is how our info flyer starts
out. It may or may not be all that correct, but I tried to use several of
the names used for OKOM amongst the Spanish press & fans to help the reader
try to understand what he might hear if he catches the band............
Dixieland Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Traditional Jazz.......... different names
for the same music....a style created in New Orleans and represented in
Madrid, Spain by the CANAL STREET JAZZ BAND during the last 37 years.
I'm actually quite pleased that we simply used Jazz Band in our name, rather
than complicating matters by adding Dixieland, or Trad, or whatever. Allows
us to be more elastic in the choice of tunes & styling, also.
