There are several interesting points here.  For one, one who plays the SLIDE 
trombone
is likely to be more reluctant to whip out his horn on the street than one 
who plays,
for instance, a trumpet.  One who plays the slide trombone is more vulnerable 
in a crowd.  On a bandstand, one has some protection from the crowd
