Seems to me that each person has a starting point of natural
musical ability or aptitude.  Those with a very high starting point
require less formal training to progress to a higher level.
Those with less natural ability require more, maybe lots more,
training to get to a satisfactory level.  And many will not get
to a listenable level with any amount of training.  Reality of
statistical distribution---bell curve, that is.
