Dear Brian;
Regarding: >As a matter of interest, did King Oliver's version include the verse?<
Yes!
Intro, chorus, the verse, then choruses. No vocal. Medium tempo.
Tightly orchestrated in the Syncopators' fashion with lots of breaks and not even a nod in the
direction of the definitive JRM version.
Still worth a listen though.
Even though the popular Morton version eclipsed (by far) the Oliver effort, in those days (as now)
the major record companies would have made the decision to withdraw it before release. Not the
bandleader.
Unless he was Whiteman, Shilkret or the like.
The JRM record was a success for Victor, so you would expect Vocalion to cash in on that.
Perhaps the Vocalion people did not like Oliver's rendition which caused them to withdraw it before
release.
There were 3 masters cut in Chicago on 22 April 1927 but only one processed (the test we have).
What I forgot to mention was that Oliver's Dixie Syncopators re-recorded "Doctor Jazz" in New York
on 15 July 1927 for use on Vocalion 1113, but all 3 masters were also rejected.
Kind regards,
Bill.
Aaaaaargh. Beryl Bryden.
We well remember her from her several long visits to Oz.
