Jim, I talked to Phil. He said Chet played a Martin Medium bore trumpet, furnished by Martin. Martin sent him a horn  every year. He had a front tooth knocked out and went through several mouth pieces, so Phil wasn't sure about the mouth piece, it was made to accommodate his physical problem.
Chet was at Fort Ord about 1948 or 49. He went to Germany and played with an Army Band . He got a discharge, according to Phil, by complaining about lack of privacy. He would not use the latrine he went into the bushes and the Army figured he was weird.
Phil says you can get the whole story about Chet in the book about him "DEEP IN A DREAM". He says it covers every little detail even about the trouble Chet and Phil got into in Harlem.
