Here's another way to look at it --

I was at a fantastic jazz club last week, and noticed that few of the hard-core fans and other musicians in the audience would applaud for a solo -- they're too busy listening to the NEXT guy's solo and don't want to be rude to him by applauding for the first guy.  So if you want applause from this crowd, put in an ensemble break between solos!
