According to an Ellington Biography, the Ellington Band bus was
traveling to their next gig. A new, young sax player thought he would
blow a few hip, difficult patterns to impress Johnny Hodges who was half
asleep. He sidled up to Hodges' seat and proceeded to blow every Charlie
Parker pattern he could think of. He played them all, even the most
difficult, perfectly.

Finally Rabbit opened on eye and fixed a stare on the kid saying; "Yeah
kid, but can you sing me a song?"

Cheers,
Steve Barbone

PS Bird's personal nickname for Rabbit was "Lily Pons." He adored his
playing.
