[Dixielandjazz] Garden hoses

Two Garden Hose stories:
I once played (for two days before quitting, with Mike Riley. Mike was a
slapstick bandleader, wrote Music Goes Round and Round, and did things
generally hazard to the sideman's health -- for which reason I said, thank
but no thanks.
However, he did have a few trombone tricks. He played it with his foot, he
played it standing on his head; but the wild one was his fast extension past
the end of the slide tube with the resulting 20 foot hurl of the slide into
the audience. He'd then dig into a box and pull out another slide section
and shrug as if it's no big deal.
Then there was a trick trombone my dad had in his prop line up. The slide
section was a rubber hose, fitted to look like the slide and painted gold.
You could play it, but when it was extended past the first few positions it
would start to droop, and by seventh position it would all hang down and
swing back and forth. A few risqué lines would follow.
I, being wise, double on the VALVE TROMBONE. No flying or limp slides for
me.
