Hello, listmates:

My thanks to Steve, Dan, Russ, and Jim for the comments.

Now I have another question!

As a reed player, I practice long, low tones because the only way I know how 
to control my
volume whilst playing a reed instrument is through breath control.

Does this technique hold true for brass players?

Are there other strategies for controlling volume whilst playing any wind 
instrument?
