Dear Pat, Elazar and Jim B
(and others who took issue with my 'Chicago- the musical' put-down).
I have not seen the film.
However, last year we did go to the brilliantly produced stage production here
in Sydney (at $90 a ticket, which hurt!), and it was all I could do to stop
myself walking out.
Why would I bother with the film version (even at seniors' club prices)?
It is no doubt very spectacular and will win some Academy Awards.
So did that other awful movie musical, 'Moulin Rouge'.
I am more concerned with the musical content.
Uninspiring, 'jazzed' up score and nothing words.
OK. OKOM can adapt to any song, but with those from 'Chicago', why bother.
To re-satisfy myself and perhaps prove myself wrong, I borrowed the soundtrack
CD from listmate Phil O'Rourke.
In particular, I have listened (and re-listened) to the 5 tunes(?) mentioned by
Elazar.
"And All That Jazz", "When You're Good to Mama", "All I Care About is Love",
"Mr. Cellophane" and "Razzle Dazzle".
Plus "Hot Honey Rag".
I will be returning Phil's CD uncopied.
Why bother?
Perhaps, as an old mouldie, I have been TOO indoctrinated by the music of the
20s and 30s and the great movie musicals.
We will have to disagree on this one.
Kind regards,
Bill.
PS: Top marks though for the fine trombone and trumpet solos on "After
Midnight".
