Hi all,

A little while ago the DJML resounded with some discussion concerning the
proposed changes to the licensing laws in England and Wales relating to the
provision of live music and the need for possibly draconion licensing
requirments which could affect jazz provision.

The Guardian reports this morning that the gevernment suffered a defeat in
the House of Lords yesterday when an amendment to the Bill was passed
exemptring all small premises from licensing for performances of live music.
This amendment would mean that smaller pubs and restaurants would be able to
offer live entertainment as long as their capacity was below 250 people and
the entertainment finished by 11.30pm.

A comment by a petulant pratt from the government side, Lord McIntosh, is
worth repeating in that he said the amendment could result in children under
18 being allowed to watch sex films. Another government spokesperson stated
after the vote,"They have voted for eight-year olds to watch the unexpurgated
Texas Chain Saw Massacre."

An enquiry should be launched to discover which planet these Government
persons come from!!!!

Cheers,

Jerry,
