I remember to have met Bill Bacin once - it's a little story.

First some start information: You should know that I live in the south-west
part of the Netherlands. It must have been somewhere in the late 1970s. My
jazz-collectors activities were limited to LPs and some card board 78rpm Hit
of the weeks happed to found on flea-markets and my information came from
those narrow printed auction lists that came from the US on thin yellow or
red paper. I asked for them by post to every address I found overseas.

One of the major jazz festivals those days was the Oude Stijl Jazz Festival
in Breda and one year my wife and I, my brother and his girl-friend should
visit the night concert. I don't know anymore how late it started, but, of
course, we were much too early in Breda. We went to the bar of the
Turfschip, the location were the festival was held and drunk a beer to kill
time. More visitors of the festival came in - also a very excited
'American-looking" guy sat at the bar "with a lot of noise" and one of the
first things he screamed to me "You're going to give me a beer". I said, "No
I guess not". He calmed down and after ten minutes he said to me: "May I ask
you something. You're from the Netherlands?" I confirmed. "I'm looking for a
guy named Hans Koert, he lives ....... " and the guy rattled my complete
address including postal zipp code. I was very amazed. Did he peeped on my
address somewhere on a paper I lost and he found on the ground or something?
I said "Yes, I know that guy - it's me" . He repleid, that he knew that
Holland was small and that he would meet me here. His bag opened and an
envelope with some thin yellow or red narrow printed auction lists came out
including a small tape recorder. He entered a message in the recorder, that
he delivered the envelope to Hans Koert. This man was Bill Bacin and he got
what he had asked for ...... a beer !!

On my turntable now: Harry James
