Dear list:

My Journal of Jazz Studies article "The Development of New Orleans and
Stride Piano Styles" is now uploaded to the Web and available for reading -
and playing:
http://www.elinewberger.com/articles/piano_styles/page28.html

This was part of a larger project to discern the principal stylistic
influences and trends. What I did here was to select, transcribe, and
compare representative twelve-bar blues choruses by Jelly Roll Morton, Dink
Johnson, Lil Hardin, Frank Melrose, Paul Lingle, Clarence Williams, James P.
Johnson, Luckey Roberts, Eubie Blake, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Fats Waller,
Art Tatum, Wally Rose, and Ralph Sutton.

You can also read three other articles on the evolution of jazz piano style:
The Transition From Ragtime To Improvised Piano Style:

Archetypes and Antecedents of Piano Blues and Boogie Woogie Style:

Eli Newberger
