Frank:
I met Frank Orchard in NYC in the early 50's. He played some jobs with Marty
Grosz and I was on several of them along with Frank Chace on clarinet. They
were at a place called the Rathskeller in the Bronx and we rode the subway
up there from Manhatten.
Later, in the 70's, I had a gig at the Cincinnati Airport restaurant and
bar. A 4 night job with hours something like 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
One evening Orchard walked in and asked if I allowed sit ins. He didn't
recognize me and was suprised with my reply: "Sure, Frank, do you have your
horn?" He then recognized me. It had been over 20 years. Frank played a
number of dates with me including a concert for Bob Rippey in Waukesha, WI.
I have the tape. The balance is not very good but I love Frank's vocals on
such as Black & Blues, etc. A really nice guy and fun guy who had many
stories he shared on the long drives to the various jobs.
Great to see his name mentioned.
Hope all is well with you, Frank.
Gene Mayl
