Of course, the OED validates the use of "crescendo" to mean a loud volume, not an increasing of volume. "The crowd noise rose to a crescendo" is a favorite of sports writers.
The OED refers to Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" as the source of this meaning. So, by writing it and getting it published, it's made so. Hmmmmm...Maybe Jelly Roll DID invent jazz!
