Listmates--
Self-taught vs conventional instruction.
Since my two questions didn't quite ring----I'll give my
take---perhaps that will get some response.
Seems to me there are advantages and disadvantages.---------------------
--------------------------
Advantages of self-taught--
...Ear training is immediate.
...Individual style is achieved early.
Disadvantages of self-taught--
...Habits of bad technique are ingrained.
...Basics of harmony, chords, etc are learned (?) the hard way.
------------------------------
Advantages of conventional instruction--
...Good habits are formed from the beginning.
...Alternatives of approach can be offered.
...Communication with other musicians has some common ground.
Disadvantages of conventional instruction--
...May be too much concerned with the written notes--improvising
and jazz rhythms may be hindered.
------------------------------------
Seems to me, proper instruction has more advantages. But there
are amongst us some terrific self-taught musicians.
