I've been using Slide-O-Mix for several years now on all my trombone slides
and find it excellent; good lubrication, no black gunk etc.

THe gunk could be a result of changing back and forth from oil to cream.
Make sure the slide is as totally free of one before you use the other.
They do not play well with each other.

If you used cold cream off the shelf of any store, it probably contained
lanolin. Lanolin is great for tuning slides, but not for a trombone main
slide. That is a common problem in the last 25 or so years, which is when
Pond's Cold Cream changed its formula and added lanolin.
DO NOT USE ANY 'COLD CREAM' PRODUCT ON A TROMBONE SLIDE. No matter how many
pimples are on it.
But, Selmer markets a trombone slide cream, aptly enough called Bach Slide
Cream, which is terrific. It is actually the original Pond's Cold Cream
formula, without lanolin, so you can get your slide working well and have a
beautiful complexion.

There are some, very few fortunately, who swear by Pledge furniture polish.
Once you try it, though, you have to stay with it. It does not come off the
slide easily.
