Hi Rob,

Doesn`t  Basin Street Blues , before the words were messed about by the PC 
brigade , say 
`Down where the dark and light folk meet`.

In any case the old saw

White, well all right
Brown , stick around
Black, stand back

refers directly to varying skin colour.
