DJML mates,
While I am afraid I am too late for Kash's need with his grandchild, I
found lots of
stuff on the song "Dixie" at Google.com. I cut and pasted an especially good
article
but blow it away somehow and have been unable to find it again. It cited a
number
of African-American musicologists, university professors, and was just
stomp-down
good. Maybe you can find it, if interested. I think it was written in 1998.

As regards the playing of "Dixie," I think Elvis got it right and did
it the only way
a White group can perform it without having their integrity questioned. I
love what he
did. That medley sends me into deep, deep emotion, longing for a day when we
can all be free of all our trials, especially those arising from racial
prejudice. I weep
every time I hear this recording, just as I do each time I hear Dr. King's "I
Have a Dream" speech.

     Best wishes to all,

Bob "still trying to learn to play the cornet" Lynn
Now living just outside Chicago in Park Forest, Illinois, formerly of
Gary, IN. and the Deep South in Brunswick, Georgia.
