This "problem" of defining a type of music sounds very familiar to me by now.
I used to assume there were workable definitions of modern jazz, traditional
jazz, ragtime, classical and even popular music. Yet, every time I tried to
pin it down the subject has exception after exception, contractions all over
the floor and people arguing over what the type is about. Why don't we just
agree that you can't pin it down too neatly? I know what I love and it's
called traditional jazz, Dixieland, ragtime, stride piano, and sometimes
barrelhouse, honky tonk or just blues. What's in a name?
