Dear Robert,
Wonderful. I have Friedlander's overpriced ($50.00 - but remaindered for
$9.95!) book and Balliett describes how Red Margiotta had a right, below
elbow amputation, and "had his trombone tucked deftly under his stump"
when he played. There is another Margiotta - Sal (b. about 1890,
clarinet) - noted in Rose and Souchon's "New Orleans Jazz. A Family
Album", and in a list of 87 New Orleans jazz musicians of Italian
descent, all born before 1914, in "Wait Until Dark" by Donald L. Morris.
Your contribution is especially good because it is documented by a
respected jazz journalist. Once more, thanks.
Fred
