On another jazz chat list I came across the following web site kindly
provided by Albert Haim. It is a pdf file and will open with Acrobat
Reader, It is a copy of a lecture delivered by Gunther Schuller at
Cambridge University in 1996 and offers a historical perspective on jazz
including some fascinating perspectives on improvisation. It is long 47
pages (large type) but well worth reading to those who seek a greater
understanding of the music.

I would also caution folks who might tend to characterize such writing
as drivel, not to open the file.
