A bass plays one and three. A drummer can to that too but a drummer also 
provides a very important two and four so essential for really hot jazz and 
rock and roll and many other musical styles. A bass normally doesn't play 
two and four unless he/she is doing a four beat thingee where all four beats 
are pushed equally.

A drummer is much more than color and flourish AND, by the way, color and 
flourish is a hot thing and EXTREMELY important in jazz and not simply an 
idea which is tossed out as "merely . . . colour and flourish."
