[Dixielandjazz] Antivirus trick

Hi Norrie and all,

John Farrell posted a method of alerting e-mailers if a worm started sending
out e-mails to everyone in your address book.

I thought it sounded logical so I did what he suggested.

Norrie Thompson responds:

>This was suggested some time ago to fool the Kak-Worm. Unfortunately, it
>doesn't work. I know!

There are a couple of things which seem reasonable to me regarding John
Farrell's suggestion.

1. It vouldn't hoit!

2. It's not intended to protect your computer, merely to alert you to the
fact that your computer has been invaded.

3. It's a totally benign protocol. Simply add a fictitious address in your
address book for "WormAlert" which would be undeliverable.

The rest is totally automatic . . . you'll be notified if the worm attempted
to send something to your fictitious e-mail address.

So Norrie, would you add some information to your last post and tell us why
it doesn't do what it's supposed to do. What experience did you have that
let you "know" why it doesn't work.

Hope all is well over there in Edinburgh . . . and say "Hi" to Mike Hart.

Cheers,

Bill Gunter
