Hi All
Having sounded off about the proliferation of `like` instead of `as if` in
current conversation please allow me to see out the Old Year in proper
curmudgeonly style by saying that poetry is supposed to rhyme and scan.
I thought everyone on this list had a background or at least an interest in
music and I find it incomprehensible that anyone could quote `poetry` with
an extra couple of bars stuck in the odd line, totally upsetting the beat.
Some of the `poetry` we have had lately has been sugary and so banal that it
would turn the stomach. That awful `Soldiers Christmas` was a case in point
, but I can forgive that as we have a different sickmaking threshold than in
the US, but not scanning is something "up with which I shall not put".

I am off now to my little cottage by the sea for the New Year break and
shall be out of touch until 2004 so Happy New Year, I love you all (exit

Cheers
