I may be wrong but was not MacHeath a character in the original musical play 
or Opera by John Gay 'The Beggar's Opera' upon which 'The Threepenny Opera' 
was based. But of course depending on how long the expression "maquereau" has 
been used it may have a significance in the choiuce of the character's name. 
Maybe  our real historians should get a look in at this!
