Thanks for the dialogue, Jim.

I've used a guitar octaver successfully, but it's easier in a studio than on
a gig.  The notes have to be distinct and clear so the electronics won't get
confused.  On a gig, it's hard to isolate the sound being fed to the
converter.  An instrument-mounted transducer works better than a regular
microphone.

Same thing with harmony devices.  The work well if the singer has a clear
voice, but not so well for voices that are husky or have complex overtones.

Same thing with those decoders for converting an analog melody  into a midi
file.  If the notes aren't right on pitch or if more than one note is being
played simultaneously, the unit or software get's confused and puts out
garbage.
