Friends:  I should mention that Fred Starr's book Red & hot: The Fate of
Jazz in the Soviet Union, Oxford U. Press, 1983 documents the ups and downs
of jazz in the Soviet Union.  There's a 1967 pix of George Avakian with a
group of Russians at a jazz festival. The book is well written with
end-notes and an index, as expected from a scholar such as Fred.  He was
founder of the Louisiana Repertory Ensemble. "Red & Hot" in paperback is on
sale for $2.95 at hamiltonbook.com.

Fred was a speaker at the first Satchmo Summerfest in New Orleans, 2001.  He
adressed the subject of Jazz in the Soviet Union during his time on the
speaker's panel.
