Here's an interesting quote to ponder from this month's Jazz Institute of
Chicago newsletter:

"One of the problems that face jazz musicians who enjoy any degree of
popularity is that they tend to be over-rated at the time and under-rated
thereafter.  Such was the fate of Ahmad Jamal.  He is not alone; Benny
Goodman, Dave Brubeck and Wynton Marsalis, for example, have all felt the
force of a critical backlash that seems to follow an artist whose appeal
