WOW. Who said jazz was dead?
2. Do any of the OKOM bands out West approach this festival for gigs on

The Monterey Jazz Festival is on. The five arena shows are sold out, but
most artists, including Joshua Redman, will play on the grounds as well.
Grounds passes are $80 for three days, $25 for Friday, and $35 for
Saturday or Sunday. Information: (925) 275-9255 or
http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org. Access to a simulcast of the shows,
starring Etta James and Charlie Haden, is included.
(Below are air fare and hotel deals that were available yesterday
afternoon. Flights are to San Jose, 73 miles away; fares are seven-day
advance purchase. Hotel rates are based on double occupancy.)
>From New York: $327 (American).
>From Phoenix: $198 (American).
>From Chicago: $293 (American).

WHERE TO STAY
Most rooms in Monterey are booked or going for upward of $300 a night;
better to stay in San Jose instead.
