And, of course, how about Big Noise from Winnetka featuring Ray Bauduc 
flailing away on Bob Haggart's bass with his drumsticks.

I know the drums and the bass are not unusual instruments in the strict 
sense that was implied, but the unusual usage out to put them in this 
category.

I also think that Haggart should have taken a chorus where he beat Bauduc's 
drum kit with his bass! That I would like to see.
